Born in Palestine, Texas in 1943, Gene Watson was singing in holiness churches with his family at an early age. His father played blues harmonica and guitar alongside African-American field laborers. Watson grew up loving both bluesman Jimmy Reed and honky-tonk king Lefty Frizzell. His earliest public country performance came when he was just 12 years old. Watson dropped out of school in the ninth grade to work fulltime. He initially supported his family by doing auto body repair, so by day he worked on cars, and at night he sang in clubs.

Gene Watson is a singer in country music's grand tradition & has the skill to give powerful vocal performances and draw all the emotion from his selected material effortlessly. Gene has remained true to his Texas music roots for the best part of 30 years & is a standard bearer for honest, traditional country music.
Gene Watson's 'Beautiful Country' speaks for itself. It is a music of the people, for the people and ultimately by one of the people. His music is part of the very constitution of country music.
 This Box Set Petition is directed to Richard Weize at Bear Family Records in Germany; its objective is to canvass for the release of a comprehensive box set of music featuring Gene Watson’s 'beautiful country'.
A Gene Watson Box Set of music would be a fitting tribute to a man who has been a standard bearer for honest, traditional country music for thirty years.
